Ultrasound Technician Education in Colorado

Students who want to attend a CAAHEP accredited school in Colorado and earn a certificate in Diagnostic Medical Sonography have one choice as of 2014. CAAHEP is The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. The program is offered by the University of Colorado Hospital in Denver, and students can earn a certificate in general sonography. Though there is the single ultrasound tech program, the Department of Radiology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine is well respected for its quality in the nation. The ultrasound technician program requirements provide didactic and clinical education and include classroom and laboratory instruction and training and hands-on scanning experience. Upon completion of the program in ultrasound technology, students have the knowledge and skills needed to pass the certification exams in gynecological, abdominal, obstetrics and superficial structure ultrasound offered by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). Many employers prefer certified sonographers. Certified sonographer have better job opportunities and earn a higher ultrasound technician pay.

Salaries and Career Outlook for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers in Colorado

The statistics from the last federal employment survey in May of 2012 indicated there were 770 Diagnostic Medical Sonographers employed in the state of Colorado. The report was provide by U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The average salary for ultrasound technicians was an impressive $75,570. This is over $9,000 more than the mean annual wage for all of the U.S. and makes it one of the top five states paying the highest salaries for employed sonographers. The number of jobs in the state is expected to grow only moderately at 30.6 percent between 2010 and 2020. By 2020, the projected number of sonography positions is 1,170.
